Local wine brands are in demand in Bangalore


In the past, wine was considered a fine, high-end drink. But the pandemic has changed that notion, along with a host of others. Now, Bengalurians are taking the European route … uncorking a bottle of wine at the table every other day. This was made possible by the rise of local brands in a market that once buzzed with imported wines.

Sumit Jaiswal, AVP Marketing and Exim at Grover Zampa Vineyards, says the prices (from R300) offered by the newly launched local wines are one of the reasons for its acceptance. “Until the pandemic struck, the most consumed wines came from Australia. During the lockdown, there was a delay in obtaining products and brands had to make do with the remaining inventory. This is probably when Indian wines, like the ones we offer, peaked. And since then, it has been a constant growth.

Although we are still relatively new to wine making, we are doing a great job and creating value for the brand. Retail distribution increased by 70 percent. It will take some time to catch up with international standards, but we’ll get there, ”says Dhall, known as“ Madame La Cave ”.

Local brands are competing fiercely against highly sought-after Australian, South African, European and Californian wines. According to wine consultant Alok Chandra, they have followed the British model where they sell well made wine at the lowest price.

“So with the different changes that everyone went through, people realized that they could enjoy this wine at the retail price rather than going to hotels and paying more for the same price. The awareness of retail prices has really helped the way people consume wine now. “

Great flavor. Compatible with pockets. These are the two aspects that Indians are keenly looking for. In fact, the reasonable price of premium wines is one of the reasons this drink has become one of the favorites of the middle class. Abhay Kewadkar, Managing Director of Tetrad Global Beverages, which produces Early Dark, says: “Whether they’re meeting in hotels or having house parties, guests want to serve premium wines. But the cost is a very important factor. The brands available in India are doing very well in this regard. With fair trade for import and export having increased four times since the pandemic, exporting will likely not begin until next year. For now, the retail value of affordable premium wines has increased.
